A Clue as to Who the U.S. Government Just Sold Bitcoin To
The US government's sizable Bitcoin holdings may surprise some. In fact, in 2022 their BTC balances far exceeded the holdings of any other nation. As of yesterday, they held more than 200,000 BTC, per Sonar. Today, that number is smaller.
In fact, it’s around ~$900 million smaller thanks to what looks like a sale of Bitcoin by Uncle Sam.
The funds were likely part of the BTC that the U.S. Government had seized in the Bitfinex hack, which is its largest inflow to date.
Where did the money go? It appears to have gone to a brand new wallet, though they did a test transfer beforehand signaling that it likely went to a third party like an OTC or large institutional investor.
For example both Cumberland and Tim Draper acquired their initial Bitcoin stashes from the U.S. Marshals Service. In fact, Draper is one of the top 20 outflows for the U.S. Government.
